CBD can be summarised in a series of bullet points:
- CBD is short for cannabidiol.
- Cannabidiol is a naturally-occurring compound found in cannabis, known as a cannabinoid.
- Cannabis Sativa is the cannabis strain that contains this cannabinoid. Hemp and Marijuana are the two varieties of the cannabis Sativa species.
- CBD products are hemp-derived, rather than marijuana-derived. Hemp contains more CBD than marijuana, while marijuana contains more of another cannabinoid: THC.
- THC is intoxicating and psychotropic, CBD is not. This means no matter how much CBD you take, you will not become “high”.
- Hemp-derived CBD is mostly legal, but laws fluctuate depending on where you are. The THC content per CBD product is usually restricted. In the UK and most EU countries, this THC limit is 0.2% per product. Again, this amount is not intoxicating.
- While marijuana is often used recreationally, hemp-derived CBD has historically been used as an agent of wellness, famed for its therapeutic potential, which we will be exploring shortly.
In our exploration of Prague’s finest CBD outfits, we may mention some cannabis-related terms that you might not have come across yet, so if you get stuck with the lingo, you can refer back to this glossary.
Full-spectrum CBD: This refinement contains all the original compounds from cannabis, including the THC. A full-spectrum refinement tends not to go through extra processing but is left in its original state. Typically, this kind of refinement will possess many different cannabinoids aside from CBD and THC. It will also usually include other active nutrients from cannabis, like vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, flavonoids and terpenes – all naturally-occurring, plant-derived compounds that are believed to boost our wellness in various ways.
Broad-spectrum CBD: The only difference between broad-spectrum CBD and full-spectrum CBD is the THC. The former does not contain any THC as it has gone through further filtering to break this cannabinoid down and abolish it from the refinement. Other than that, it usually contains all the same phytonutrients and other cannabinoids indigenous to cannabis Sativa that you would find in a full-spectrum CBD product.
CBD Isolate: Pure, unadulterated cannabidiol that has been through the heaviest extraction processes to break down all the other phytocompounds from the hemp plant, until CBD is all that remains.
Entourage Effect: This effect can only be produced by broad-spectrum and full-spectrum refinements. It refers to the way all the phytochemicals work synergistically when they are all present in a refinement. This effect was first described by Raphael Mechoulam and Shimon Ben-Shabat in 1998. Because CBD Isolate is cannabidiol on its own, there are no synergy partners to enable the entourage effect. For this reason, it is thought that CBD Isolate isn’t quite as beneficial as its full-spectrum or broad-spectrum counterparts.
CBD Oil: One of the many formats in which you will find CBD. CBD concentrate will usually be mixed with a carrier oil, be it olive oil, MCT (from coconuts), hemp seed oil, pomegranate seed oil, avocado oil or grapeseed oil. You may opt to take CBD oil infused into a beverage, food, or just as it is, by dropping some of the oil beneath your tongue for fast absorption into the bloodstream.
CBD Edibles: CBD that can be eaten. CBD edibles may manifest in the form of gummies, chocolate, baked goods – or anything that you make yourself which has CBD infused into it. Note that, unlike infamous weed brownies, CBD edibles will not make you high.
CBD Topicals: CBD in the form of a cream, balm, lotion, body oil, salve – essentially anything that can be applied to the skin. Topicals are a great choice for targeted relief to the skin, muscles and joints.
CBD Hashish: Also known as hash, CBD hashish is a concentrated form of CBD. You can smoke hash, vape it or cook with it. It’s typically made from cannabis plants that have high concentrations of CBD and low concentrations of THC. It can be made by rubbing the crystals off of the buds of the plant, then compressing them. However, manufacturing of hash is usually slightly more complicated than this. Indeed, it means taking those same CBD-rich components, like the buds and the pollen, and pressing them with large sieves or ice water. Preferably, hash is made without any additives, keeping it all-natural and unadulterated. Because CBD hash is a concentrate, it will be much more powerful than other forms of CBD, meaning less is needed to obtain the desired effects. Again, CBD hash will not intoxicate you as THC-rich hash would.
Non-GMO: GMO stands for “Genetically Modified Organisms”, which are living organisms whose genetic material have been artificially altered through genetic engineering. To make an organism GM, scientists change the genetic makeup of the organism. Plants and crops are largely treated with genetic modification, usually to withstand chemical herbicides and pesticides, which enables farmers to use these harsh chemicals on the plants. These chemicals might be used to make the plants easier to grow, even though the chemicals pose risks for humans in the long run. The safety and long-term implications of GMOs are presently unknown, but many fear that they may be harmful to human health, as well as to the environment.
So, a non-GMO hemp plant is one that has been grown minus the harmful risks, toxins, or chemicals, resulting in a non-GMO final CBD product. This means you won’t have to worry about what you might be consuming when you take your CBD.
CBD is thought to have a number of therapeutic credentials:
Anticonvulsant: Its potential to reduce the occurrence of seizures in epilepsy patients is one of CBD’s most notable qualities. So consistent were these findings that they led to the manufacturing and approval (by numerous health agencies) of the cannabidiol-based drug, Epidiolex. Epidiolex is now often used to treat various strains of epilepsy, namely Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet Syndrome and Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, and to decrease the occurrence of seizures.
Antiemetic: Research indicates that CBD exerts anti-nausea effects. One study asserts “Preclinical research indicates that cannabinoids, including CBD, may be effective clinically for treating both nausea and vomiting produced by chemotherapy or other therapeutic treatments”. By having an indirect impact on some of the important receptors that modulate feelings of nausea, CBD is thought to suppress our urge to vomit, thus rendering it a useful alternative to conventional pharmaceutical agents that are used to treat the more difficult-to-control symptoms of nausea associated with chemotherapy.
Anti-inflammatory. CBD is thought to work with our (CB2) immunoregulatory receptors to help combat and regulate inflammation. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that this cannabis-derivative could help manage inflammatory symptoms pertaining to a number of inflammation-based ailments, like eczema, some types of arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease – even neuroinflammation.
Antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are necessary to help the body fight oxidative stress, that is, the excess of free radicals in the body which, if left to their own devices can cause various long term health conditions. We do not produce enough of our own antioxidants, so we need to take them in from external sources, like food or supplements. CBD is thought to harbour antioxidant properties, so regular intake of this cannabinoid could help us to combat oxidative damage. On account of its antioxidant status, it is also thought to be a neuroprotector, protecting our neurological health from succumbing to neurodegenerative illness.
Mood-balancing: CBD has been under clinical investigation time and again for its anti-anxiety, antidepressant and even antipsychotic qualities. The results are astounding and suggest that cannabidiol can tame various symptoms connected with these neuropsychiatric disorders. CBD seems to have a strong affinity to the serotonin receptor. It is also thought to work with our stress hormone, cortisol. Overall, cannabidiol is thought to communicate with essential, mood-regulating neurochemicals in the brain.

Cannabis for recreational use is illegal in the Czech Republic, but personal possession has been decriminalised since 1st January 2010, and medical cannabis has been legal since 1st April 2013.
Possession of up to 10 grams of dry cannabis for personal use, or cultivation of up to five plants, constitutes a civil offence under laws enacted in 2010, which could result in a fine of up to 15,000CZK (roughly £510). Possession of larger amounts than this can lead to a jail sentence of up to one year.
Trafficking is a criminal offence, with a minimum penalty set at two years imprisonment and a maximum penalty of 18 years imprisonment, though sentences of 10-18 years are only imposed in extreme cases.
In January 2013, the Czech Senate passed a bill allowing cannabis to be legally available on prescription in pharmacies as a medicine. This law came into effect on 1st April 2013, and since then, cannabis for medical usage has been legal and regulated in the Czech Republic.
This law allows for up to 180g of dry matter per month, as prescribed by specialised physicians.
In the Czech Republic, pure CBD is not a scheduled substance. CBD refinements must always be THC-free, but CBD products can be purchased openly.
