In 1963, a scientist in Israel Dr Raphael Mechoulam and his team revealed the individual effects of the phytocannabinoids that had been discovered. After so much hard work in the years that followed, the team also discovered the existence of an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in the body. This finding shifted the perception of cannabis throughout the world.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS)

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a biological system that's made up of neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors. Fundamentally, endocannabinoids are chemical substances (cannabinoids) that are produced naturally by the body. If you split the word, you get 'endo' cannabinoid — the word 'endo' being derived from the term endogenous - meaning produced within the system or organism.

How the ECS works

Endocannabinoids bind onto cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. These receptors are located in the central and peripheral nervous systems. When they bind, they stimulate the ECS. According to studies, the ECS is also responsible for the homeostasis of the body and skin.

Homeostasis is the regulation of various elements of the body to achieve a stable equilibrium. The ECS modulates factors, such as heart rate, body temperature, mood, appetite, immune function, and blood pH to maintain the needed balance.

To understand how the ECS on the skin works, you should first understand how the skin functions. The skin is a protective barrier that protects the body against the adverse effects of the environment. It has an independent immune system and a mesh of sensory nerves. In addition to that, it's a source of some hormones that are used by the body. The skin is composed of three layers; the first is called the epidermis. This outer layer (epidermis) is made up of cells called keratinocytes. Its role is to protect the body from UV radiation, chemicals, extreme temperatures, allergens, and microbes from the environment.

The second layer is called the dermis. This layer is made up of collagen and elastin fibres. These substances provide strength and elasticity to the skin. The dermis is where appendages such as hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands are housed. They support the waterproof barrier of the skin; regulate the temperature of the body, and produce hormones that include vitamin D and steroids. The dermis also possesses the immune system of the skin. Immune cells can be found in this layer, ready to take action whenever there is a health threat. A dense network of nerve fibres can also be found in this layer. They are there to recognise stimuli on the skin. This is what enables you to feel. The third and final skin layer is called the subcutis. This layer acts as fat storage. The fat here provides cushion and insulation. Furthermore, it functions as a fuel reserve that supports you when your sugar levels drop.

The ECS and the skin

According to research, the skin possesses an ECS just like the body. The function of this ECS is to maintain an overall balance of the skin's cell functions. In other words, this ECS facilitates the skin's homeostasis. Some of the factors it modulates are pain, temperature, immune function, and cell reproduction. The endocannabinoids of this ECS are produced by cells of the epidermis, sebaceous glands, and hair follicles. Two neurotransmitters of this system that are commonly known are 2-AG and anandamide. These neurotransmitters interact with cannabinoid receptors located in nearly all skin cells. The presence of cannabinoid receptors in most skin cells shows that all components of the skin can be regulated by the ECS.

• Epidermis: endocannabinoids can activate cells of the epidermis to reduce pain and inflammation. This also helps in regulating the defence barrier of this skin layer.

• Sensory nerves: sensory nerves contain cannabinoid receptors at their tips. Activation of the cannabinoid receptors can help to block their action and suppress the sensation of itch and pain.
